Boston’s Cab Drivers Push for Meter Rate Increase

For the first time in six years the City of Boston’s Hackney Division has called a hearing to consider a meter rate increase for Boston’s cab drivers. The hearing is the direct result of the cab drivers joining the United Steel Workers last fall. The hearing will be held on Tuesday June 24th at Roxbury Community College at 10AM on the 24th.

GBLC and Boston Building Trades Council Push for REO in Somerville

The Greater Boston Labor Council has partnered with the Boston Building Trades Council in seeking adoption of a Responsible Employer Ordinance for the City of Somerville. REO’s require contractors that bid on municipal construction projects to provide health care coverage to their employees and document that they have access to certified apprentice training.

On March 26th a strong contingent of union leaders and Somerville residents testified in support of the REO at a hearing of the Somerville Board of Alderman’s legislative committee. Representatives of the Somerville Chamber of Commerce and the Association of Builders and Contractors, the anti-union trade association, spoke in opposition.

Legislative Breakfast a huge success

A capacity crowd of nearly 350 unionists, lawmakers and administration officials attended the Greater Boston Labor Council’s annual legislative breakfast on Monday March 3rd. The venue for the event was the rooftop ballroom of the OMNI Parker House in downtown Boston.

Rogers re-elected as Executive ST

On December 4th Rich Rogers was elected to a second four-year term as Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the GBLC. Rogers’ was nominated by GBLC President Louis Mandarini and elected by acclamation. ‘ I look forward to working with everyone in the Greater Boston labor community to continue to build the council into an even stronger voice for working families throughout our jurisdiction’. Said Rogers upon accepting the nomination.

Hold the date: October 16th

The campaign to unionize Boston’s massive health care industry will kick off with a rally in the Longwood Medical Area of Boston on the afternoon of Tuesday October 16th.

Salute to Municipal Officeholders Set for November 14th

The Montvale Plaza in Stoneham will once again be the venue for the Greater Boston Labor Council’s 4th annual ‘Salute to Municipal Officeholders’. The event will be held on the evening of Wednesday November 14th.
